His speech also sometimes has Flowery Elizabethan English influence (because his mother speaks it), and he occasionally uses Purple Prose.Īt Least I Admit It: A major part of his philosophy and interpretation of Shadow Work, because he values honesty and despises hypocrisy. In his opinion, hypocrisy demonstrates a lack of self-awareness- Shadow-denial rather than Shadow-acceptance. Though he avoids seriously hurting people, sometimes his intentions are good and sometimes they are not.Īntiquated Linguistics: He usually speaks a downplayed version of this because of his royal upbringing in a somewhat archaic setting. Because of his wealth and social status, Astor is not a Classical Anti-Hero, but his questionable morals and behavior make him qualify. What do you expect from a Shadow?Īnimal Eyes: He has violet cat eyes (though he still has a visible sclera, like a human), complete with a tapetum lucidum. This trope applies to many Shadows.Īnimal Motifs: Cats (in his eyes, graceful movement, and personality traits, not to mention his pet kittens) and birds, particularly birds of prey (his wings, his name, his love of freedom, and his aggression).Īnti-Hero: Astor is a protagonist and he is not evil, but he is morally ambiguous and sometimes crosses boundaries. He loves that he can choose how human he wants to appear, without changing much about his actual appearance.Īll Girls Want Bad Boys: Though he may be debonair and genuinely devoted to Nyx, Astor has anger issues, takes pleasure in tormenting his enemies, and seduces girls for their souls. When he covers himself with his folds and gets down on all fours, he looks simply bestial. Astor deliberately exploits this trope sometimes. In any case, he's human enough, putting him squarely in this trope. When asked what he is, sometimes describes himself as " both a man and a monster."

Astor's humanity is actually very much in question, because of the nature of his mother. Astor could technically be Semi-Divine, distantly descended from Eldritch Abominations, or possibly even a Humanoid Abomination himself. Unlike most Shadows, he also has wings, which make him even less human. This tends to make his hubris even worse.Īmbiguously Human: Like most Shadows, he looks mostly human but with eerie animal-like eyes and pale skin. He is also a Hidden Badass and can fight magnificently. Man, this trope list is long.)Īgent Peacock: Astor is a vain, flamboyant Long-Haired Pretty Boy whose magical powers are almost as feared as his mother's. The closest thing I've seen is naturally, Lestat, but even Lestat is more evil than Astor. This is a very good thing for me as an author because it means I'm doing something that hasn't really been done before. There are no tropes that describe a protagonist that acts like a cruel, sophisticated, seductive villain for the fun of it but doesn't actually have malicious intent. He just acts like one because Evil Is Cool, Evil Is Sexy, and Evil Feels Good. There is no one trope that effectively sums up his character there are many that would fit him, if he were a villain or even a Villain Protagonist, but he's not.
